Port Adelaide ruck Matilda Scholz has criticised comparisons between AFLW players and their male counterparts after negative reactions to her team's dancing while lightning interrupted a match in Melbourne.

The 21-year-old said the comments made her angry, although she had expected criticism on social media. She believed many of those commenting did not watch women's sport and were unwilling to understand how AFLW players approached their preparation.

Port's players performed the Nutbush while their match against St Kilda was halted for an hour because of lightning. After the interruption, the Power won by six points.

Scholz doubted the result would change the minds of those critics, saying they were not watching the AFLW or understanding the way its players wanted to prepare and play.

She said she would be willing to explain those differences to people prepared to listen. Scholz argued that comparisons with men's football were unhelpful and that AFLW players wanted to be recognised as individuals rather than measured against male athletes.
