Nathan Cleary has publicly thanked partner Mary Fowler for travelling to Sydney to help during his recovery from two operations. The Matildas forward withdrew from Australia's European fixtures against Germany and Haiti, with Football Australia citing personal circumstances.

The 28-year-old Penrith halfback needed emergency surgery for a badly broken leg sustained during the Panthers' preliminary final defeat in late September. A broken foot on his other leg required another hospital visit and operation days later.

In a social media post, Cleary expressed his gratitude to Fowler for making the journey and caring for him during his recovery. The 23-year-old plays club football for Manchester City.

Matildas coach Joe Montemurro said the withdrawal followed discussions involving Fowler, Manchester City and Football Australia staff. He backed the decision and said providing a supportive environment for players was important.

Australia lost 4-2 to Germany, ranked No.3 in the world. The European friendlies form part of the Matildas' preparations for the 2027 World Cup, which Brazil will host across June and July.
