A briefing for a proposed appearance by Anthony Albanese at Marrickville Golf Club outlined A$6.05 million in improvements but omitted sewerage repairs, which the prime minister told parliament were the purpose of the funding.

Documents obtained through Freedom of Information laws show an invitation from Transport Minister Catherine King's office was sent on 4 September, five days before Albanese's undisclosed honorary membership became public. A senior adviser supported his attendance, although the proposed 12 September event never took place.

The departmental briefing listed clubhouse renovations, upgrades to bar and outdoor dining facilities, a new pro shop and toilets. It also included a dog-walking station and stormwater collection for irrigation.

Addressing the House of Representatives on 9 September, Albanese said the money was intended to resolve a septic issue that sent raw sewage into the Cooks River when flooding occurred.

Inner West Council Mayor Darcy Byrne said NSW government funding was paying for the sewerage repairs. Those works were initially to be covered by the A$6.05 million, he said, before the state brought forward its funding. Byrne could not say whether total spending on the club would fall because renovation designs remained unfinished.

Shadow Infrastructure Minister Bridget McKenzie accused Albanese of misleading parliament. A Senate inquiry is examining possible conflicts of interest and whether more than A$500 million in grants, heavily favouring Labor-held seats, constituted pork-barrelling.

Albanese pledged the club funding during the 2025 federal election campaign. After his honorary membership became public in September, he declined it in a letter to the club.
