Matt Renshaw scored 190 as Australia recovered from 6-124 to finish with 390 on the second day of the opening Test against South Africa in Durban. It was his second Test century, coming 3,567 days after his first.

South Africa reached 1-27 before poor light brought play to an end. Josh Hazlewood removed Ryan Rickelton for a duck, with an edge from a drive taken at third slip.

Renshaw and Nathan Lyon put on 134, Australia's biggest ninth-wicket stand since 1894. Lyon contributed 27, while captain Pat Cummins made 43. Renshaw had been on 69 when Lyon joined him.

The left-hander reached his hundred from his 204th delivery by hitting Marco Jansen to the boundary at long-on. His innings lasted 397 balls and ended two deliveries after tea, when he edged Simon Harmer to slip.

Renshaw, 30, said he had doubted he would get another Test opportunity after failing to make the most of his chance in 2023. Dropped three times since his first hundred, he credited the setbacks with helping him learn. He had returned as an opener in Australia's previous Test in August but batted at No.5 in Durban.
