Robbie Fox will stay on as strategic projects lead for the Tasmania Devils after the club decided against renewing his VFL playing contract, citing factors that included expectations about player conduct.

Fox, 33, was captain during Tasmania’s inaugural VFL season. The Devils said their decision took account of the football program’s future direction and its priority of developing emerging talent, as well as behavioural standards.

Chief marketing officer Kath McCann said Fox had room for improvement in some situations, but stressed that no single incident had prompted the decision.

When asked why Fox would retain his staff job, McCann declined to discuss internal processes. She said the matter had been addressed with him and the club was satisfied with the outcome. She also declined to discuss whether he was remorseful.

Fox had not responded to requests for comment. He returned to his home state after playing 105 games for the Sydney Swans, but injuries limited his inaugural Devils season to 13 VFL appearances.
