Mitchell Starc finished with 6-72 as Australia dismissed South Africa for 329 by stumps on the first day of the series-deciding third Test at Newlands in Cape Town.

Pat Cummins chose to bowl, but South Africa advanced to 0-158 before Nathan Lyon made the breakthrough. Starc then claimed four wickets across six balls late in the day, using the second new ball to end the innings.

Starc said Australia had found less swing and sideways movement than expected and reconsidered their approach at lunch. He said dismissing South Africa before the close was a good outcome after the hosts' strong start.

Lyon removed Marques Ackerman for 95 and bowled Temba Bavuma for a duck, finishing with 2-71. Aiden Markram made 78 before Starc caught him near the boundary off Josh Hazlewood, while Cooper Connolly took his first Test wicket by trapping Matthew Breetzke lbw. South Africa lost five wickets for 29 runs.

Marco Jansen and Ryan Rickelton added 95 for the seventh wicket after tea. Starc broke through by dismissing Rickelton lbw for 42, then bowled Jansen for 52 and Gerald Coetzee for a duck. Kagiso Rabada also fell lbw without scoring.

Australia made four selection changes after Steve Smith withdrew with a neck injury. Josh Inglis replaced Smith, while Lyon, Connolly and Cameron Green returned in place of Boland, Nic Maddinson and Beau Webster.
