Australia vice-captain Travis Head has described criticism from some former players as unfair, arguing that batting conditions have changed since their careers. Speaking before the opening Test against South Africa in Durban, he said the current team could handle the scrutiny.

Head did not identify individual commentators or remarks. His comments followed Matthew Hayden’s criticism of selectors over Nic Maddinson’s inclusion. Head said the team respected earlier generations, but found some of their assessments disappointing.

Test batting averages have fallen by close to 20 per cent since the end of the 2010s, with Sheffield Shield averages also declining since the mid-2000s. While some critics have linked the trend to T20 cricket, Head argued that pitch conditions were a major factor. He said statistics showed greater movement of the ball and that matches were finishing faster.

Cricket Australia has asked curators to give batters more favourable conditions as surfaces have become tougher for batting and drop-in pitches more common. Head cited Darren Lehmann’s Sheffield Shield run-scoring record when discussing how conditions differed between eras.

Head also referred to tensions involving former players around Justin Langer’s departure as coach in 2022. Langer rejected a six-month contract offer after Australia’s 2021-22 Ashes victory. Despite those disagreements, Head stressed their shared commitment to Australian cricket. He also confirmed he would remain an opening batter in South Africa.
