Australia lost three wickets in the opening session of the first Test against South Africa in Durban, with returning opener Nic Maddinson dismissed without scoring and Marnus Labuschagne departing on the last delivery before lunch. The tourists reached the break at 3-84.

Maddinson faced 33 balls before chopping a Marco Jansen delivery onto his stumps. It was the longest recorded duck by an Australian Test opener, and Australia's second-longest where ball counts are available, behind Mike Whitney's 42-ball innings against England at Old Trafford in 1981.

Travis Head scored nine before edging Wiaan Mulder down the leg side. Labuschagne and Steve Smith then put on 60 runs, but Mulder trapped Labuschagne lbw for 37. His review failed, with ball tracking returning umpire's call for impact.

Smith remained 25 not out after hitting spinner Keshav Maharaj for two sixes in Maharaj's opening over.

Maddinson, 34, was brought into the squad after Josh Inglis fractured a finger. His previous Test appearance was against Pakistan on Boxing Day in 2016, and he had gone more than 18 months without a first-class match. His selection as opener moved Matt Renshaw to No.5 and gave Head a third opening partner across three Tests.
