Chris Fagan has joined Carlton as director of coaching, taking on a newly established position supporting rookie coach Josh Fraser. The 65-year-old will also have duties on match days.

The appointment follows Fagan’s departure from Brisbane, where he spent 10 years as senior coach and led the Lions to three premierships across four grand final appearances. He left days after the club won its third consecutive flag.

Fagan had wanted to relocate to Melbourne. Collingwood, Melbourne and Tasmania were among the clubs that made inquiries before he accepted Carlton’s offer.

Fagan said the opportunity to focus full-time on supporting others appealed to him. He said discussions with Carlton’s leadership revealed a shared direction for the club, alongside recognition that substantial work remained before it could contend.

Carlton football boss Chris Davies said Fagan and Fraser had developed a connection through their shared approach to people and program development. Davies said the appointment would provide support for Fraser and help develop the club’s coaches.

Brisbane is continuing its search for Fagan’s successor.
