Isabelle Kelly will captain Australia at the Rugby League World Cup, with the Jillaroos seeking a fourth successive title. She said NRL boss Peter V’landys told her of the appointment moments after she lifted the trophy with the Roosters.

The centre takes on the national role after a season in which she led the Roosters without a defeat and New South Wales won their series 3-0 under her captaincy.

Kelly said she had not expected to become captain. Her focus during her time with the Jillaroos had been on giving her best performances for Australia.

She said the squad brought together newcomers and established players. Kelly wants to maintain high standards while recognising the contribution of those who came before the current group.

Samoa will be Australia’s first group-stage opponent, followed by England and Wales. New Zealand are in a separate pool.
