Ponga in contention for World Cup semi-final return
The Newcastle star could face Tonga just 22 days after breaking an arm, while Phoenix Crossland is also available after suspension.

Kalyn Ponga has been included on New Zealand’s extended bench for the Rugby League World Cup semi-final against Tonga at Newcastle’s McDonald Jones Stadium, with teammate Dane Gagai saying his return depends on medical clearance.
Ponga broke an arm during New Zealand’s opening match, a 24-22 defeat by Australia. He remained on the field for more than 20 minutes after the injury and later had surgery with the aim of playing in the finals.
Gagai said Ponga would need to meet the requirements set by the physiotherapists before taking the field. He praised his Newcastle teammate’s toughness and willingness to play through injuries, but said Ponga would not place his own interests ahead of the team.
Phoenix Crossland could also join the side after serving a four-game suspension. The ban followed a hip-drop tackle that broke Nathan Cleary’s ankle during Newcastle’s preliminary final win over Penrith. Gagai welcomed the prospect of playing alongside Crossland again, saying the hooker had brought energy to the New Zealand camp despite being unable to play.
