Steve Smith has completed a longer batting session despite neck soreness as Australia delay naming their team for the deciding third Test against South Africa in Cape Town until the toss.

The vice-captain spent around 35 minutes facing deliveries from batting coach Michael Di Venuto’s side-arm device, then took an extended break to stretch his neck. He resumed for about 10 minutes before kicking the crease and packing his bag.

That followed an earlier session limited to around 20 minutes of gentle throwdowns. Australia had expressed confidence Smith could play before the longer workout.

Captain Pat Cummins said Smith had been batting well and hoped he could contribute even if he was short of full fitness.

Matt Renshaw is expected to open, with Nic Maddinson omitted, while Cameron Green has regained fitness and will take a middle-order position. Marnus Labuschagne is expected to retain his place ahead of Josh Inglis.

Selectors also face a choice between Cooper Connolly and Beau Webster for No.7. Nathan Lyon’s likely involvement could put Scott Boland’s place under pressure despite his five-wicket haul in Gqeberha.

The match marks Australia’s first Test at Newlands since the 2018 ball-tampering scandal. Defeat would also cost Australia the No.1 world ranking, with South Africa taking their place.
