TPG Telecom has used a trial at the Royal Adelaide Show to give eftpos payments dedicated network capacity, prioritising the transactions through a technique known as 5G network slicing.
The telco said payment delays had affected vendors during peak periods at the previous show. Mobile traffic in the surrounding area doubles during the event compared with usual levels.
Chief technology officer Giovanni Chiarelli said the trial gave TPG an opportunity to test a key standalone 5G capability in a live setting.
TPG said it was the first time it had deployed network slicing in production on its live standalone 5G network. Its initial standalone 5G services began operating in parts of Sydney in 2021.
