Trevor Dyer is returning to the Caulfield Cup as guest of honour, with 67 years having passed since he steered Regal Wench to victory in the 1959 race.

Just 21 when he won, Dyer was contesting the Cup for the second time. His mount, a 25-1 chance, finished a neck ahead.

Dyer recalled waiting for an opening before seizing the chance when a small gap appeared. He described the feeling of winning as an explosion through his body.

The victory remains prominent at his home, which he named after Regal Wench. Racing keepsakes occupy his bedroom and garage, including the saddle, whip, goggles, cap and silks from that day.

Showing the collection, Dyer embraced his racing pants and said he still loved the items. Asked whether he could now be swell-headed about the achievement, he laughed and said he was all the time.
