Matt Owies has lost his place on West Coast’s list before completing his contract, with a year remaining on the deal. His departure follows two seasons in which he scored nine goals from 19 appearances.

Eagles list manager Matt Clarke said talks involving Owies and his management had established that the forward was open to leaving West Coast and returning to Victoria. Clarke also thanked Owies for his contribution.

Owies arrived from Carlton following a trade at the end of 2024 and agreed to a three-year contract. He was unable to secure a regular position in the team.

That trade sent pick No.3 to Carlton, which selected Jagga Smith. West Coast took Bo Allan at pick No.16 and also gained Richmond premiership player Liam Baker through the deal.

Thanking West Coast for the opportunity, Owies said he had enjoyed being at the club despite the outcome not matching expectations. He said the team was heading in the right direction under coach Andrew McQualter.
