Point Of Law has secured a Melbourne Cup berth by winning the Geelong Cup, with jockey Ethan Brown guiding the Ciaron Maher-trained four-year-old home in the 2400m Group 3 race.

Favourite The Euphrates led Point Of Law as the pair broke away from the rest of the field around halfway. Brown moved Point Of Law into the lead on the turn for home before holding off Small Fry. Omni Man finished third, while The Euphrates faded to midfield.

Small Fry rose from 54th to 45th in the Melbourne Cup entry order following the result. Omni Man moved to 47th.

All three placegetters were bred in the northern hemisphere and were racing in Australia for the first time. That combination last occurred in the Geelong Cup in 2016, when Qewy beat Grey Lion and Oceanographer.

Dunaden, in 2011, was the most recent of only three horses to win both Cups. Americain achieved the double in 2010 and Media Puzzle in 2002. Last year’s Geelong Cup winner, Torranzino, finished fifth in the Melbourne Cup.
