North Melbourne cuts short Blakey conference after Tarryn Thomas question
The Kangaroos have signed Nick Blakey to an eight-year deal worth almost A$12 million. He remains under police investigation, with no charges laid.

A question comparing recruit Nick Blakey’s situation with that of former player Tarryn Thomas prompted North Melbourne media manager Mick Tormey to close a press conference celebrating Blakey’s arrival.
List manager Brady Rawlings dismissed the comparison before Tormey said the questions were becoming repetitive and brought proceedings to a halt. A journalist’s attempt to ask a further question was declined. Thomas had left the Kangaroos following off-field issues, including inappropriate behaviour towards a woman.
Police are still investigating Blakey and Sydney players Isaac Heeney, James Jordon and Chad Warner; none has been charged. Sydney suspended Blakey after the Round 23 incident at the Pullman Hotel.
Earlier questions focused on North Melbourne’s assessment of Blakey’s character and professionalism, and whether the club had consulted members of its women’s team. Rawlings said the club was satisfied with its checks, had a longstanding relationship with Blakey’s family and had received board endorsement.
Responding to a question about members potentially objecting to the signing, Rawlings characterised Blakey’s involvement as staying out late. He said members could have confidence in the club’s leadership.
Blakey, 26, earned All-Australian selection in 2024 and has signed for eight years for almost A$12 million. Rawlings said he did not know whether the investigation might affect Blakey’s Round 1 availability next season, but stressed the club’s long-term commitment.
North Melbourne traded picks No.6 and No.47, its 2027 second-round pick and first- and second-round selections for 2028. The return comprised Blakey, pick No.52 and a second-round selection for 2028.
