Two police officers helped a couple deliver their daughter beside the Princes Highway near Warrnambool after stopping their speeding SUV shortly after 2am on 19 October.

Sergeant Liam Cook and Constable Angus Hill were patrolling near Dennington when they stopped the vehicle. Driver Joel explained that his wife, Jamie-Lee, was in labour and asked whether any fines could be dealt with later.

Sergeant Cook called an ambulance, but Ashlee arrived within two minutes. Jamie-Lee said Constable Hill offered to hold her hand as Sergeant Cook assisted Joel with the delivery.

The baby was healthy, and an ambulance took her and her parents to hospital as a precaution. The family had travelled from their home about 50 kilometres outside Warrnambool and were within 4 kilometres of Warrnambool Base Hospital.

Ashlee is the couple's second child and has an 18-month-old sister. Jamie-Lee said she felt lucky to have had the officers there for the birth.

The family later met the officers again. Sergeant Cook described the delivery as a career highlight, while Constable Hill said it was a welcome opportunity to help someone during a happy occasion.
