The Sydney Roosters have withdrawn their offer to extend Sam Walker’s contract beyond 2027, saying they could not reach agreement with the 24-year-old halfback’s management.

Walker had been seeking a longer stay, but negotiations broke down over the amount sought by his camp. The club said its recruitment and retention decisions were aimed at preserving the squad’s strength, balance and long-term success.

His manager, Clinton Schifcofske, said either side was entitled to reject the proposed terms. He maintained that Walker could still play for the Roosters in 2027 and potentially beyond, while acknowledging he could not speak for the player about returning to negotiations.

Before the withdrawal was announced, coach Trent Robinson had expected a resolution within hours. He said Walker’s Rugby League World Cup duties had delayed the opportunity for the player to meet his management.

Walker returned from an ankle injury during the Roosters’ run to their grand final victory against Newcastle. He subsequently made his Kangaroos debut against Fiji.
