Ponga helps New Zealand beat Tonga to reach World Cup final
New Zealand will face either Australia or Samoa after a 34-10 semi-final win, with Kalyn Ponga returning 23 days after breaking his arm.

New Zealand have beaten Tonga 34-10 in Newcastle to advance to the Rugby League World Cup final, with Kalyn Ponga helping create four tries on his return from a broken arm.
The Kiwis will meet the winner of Australia’s semi-final against Samoa. It is New Zealand’s first final appearance since their defeat by Australia in 2013, as they pursue a second title.
Ponga played 23 days after suffering the injury in the tournament opener. He supplied the pass for Briton Nikora to score after three minutes and later stopped Demitric Vaimauga from scoring with a try-saving tackle.
Jojo Fifita scored twice for Tonga before Dane Gagai’s try helped New Zealand take a 12-10 advantage into the break. Gagai scored after Tonga fullback Lehi Hopoate mishandled a Jahrome Hughes kick and Ponga tackled him. The bunker cleared the challenge despite questions over whether Hopoate had possession.
After half-time, Ponga provided scoring passes for Casey McLean and Xavier Willison. Hughes and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad also crossed as wind and rain affected play.
New Zealand captain James Fisher-Harris was put on report over a raised knee during a tackle, while Naufahu Whyte sustained an ankle injury. The Kiwi Ferns also reached their final after keeping Samoa scoreless.
