Walters backs Staggs as Mitchell takes bench role for Samoa semi-final
Reece Walsh keeps the fullback spot for Australia’s World Cup clash at Allianz Stadium, with James Tedesco named as a reserve.

Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters has defended his selections for Australia’s World Cup semi-final with Samoa, retaining Kotoni Staggs at right centre and including Latrell Mitchell on the bench.
Staggs has been selected at right centre throughout the tournament, while Bradman Best has moved ahead of Mitchell on the left. Mitchell has not played in Australia’s past two matches. The Kangaroos won all three of their group games.
Walters said he was pleased with Staggs’ progress but remained open to changing the centre combination. He said Mitchell’s experience and ability to produce decisive plays made his inclusion important for the knockout stage, although his involvement would depend on how the match unfolded.
Sam Walker and Ethan Strange will also be on the bench. Walters confirmed James Tedesco would be a reserve, with Reece Walsh retaining the fullback position for the match at Allianz Stadium.
Walters said competition for places had benefited both fullbacks. He did not rule out Tedesco returning if Australia advanced, and said he believed the selected team had the right balance to face Samoa.
