Walsh helps Australia edge New Zealand in World Cup opener
Selected ahead of James Tedesco, Reece Walsh scored an 80-metre try as the Kangaroos won 24-22 at Allianz Stadium.

Australia began its 2026 Rugby League World Cup campaign with a 24-22 victory over New Zealand, with fullback Reece Walsh playing a central role before a crowd of more than 41,000 at Allianz Stadium.
Walsh recorded 206 run metres and 9 tackle breaks, and stopped Kalyn Ponga short of the try line. His selection ahead of Clive Churchill Medal winner James Tedesco had prompted debate before the match.
After scoring from 80 metres out, Walsh suffered cramps and vomited, leaving Latrell Mitchell to take the kick. Walsh said he had not played for about nine weeks and credited coach Kevin Walters with trusting him to prepare for the tournament.
Walsh said facing the haka for the first time had stirred emotions as he thought about family and friends who had supported him. He also praised Tedesco for answering his questions during preparations, saying the victory did not guarantee him the fullback position.
Walsh said he would support Tedesco when his opportunity came, and credited debutant Jack Bostock with important contributions to the win.
Ponga suffered a suspected broken arm. Walsh expressed disappointment at the injury and praised the New Zealand fullback’s performance.
